W-2 vs. 1099/Self-Employed — What Changes
When you add a source, Flux asks whether it's a W-2 (Employee) or 1099 / Self-Employed source. This affects a few things:
- Tax withholding fields — W-2 sources show fields for federal, state, and local withholding (since your employer withholds taxes for you). 1099 sources skip these, since nothing is withheld automatically.
- Self-employment tax — Income from 1099 sources is subject to a 15.3% self-employment tax, which Flux factors into your tax estimate automatically. Half of that amount is deducted from your taxable income, just like on your actual return.
- Jump Start and document upload — W-2 sources let you upload a pay stub; 1099 sources let you upload an invoice or 1099 form instead.
You can mix both types of sources — Flux pools all your income together when estimating your total tax picture, so you get one accurate number instead of separate estimates per source.
